After three top-ten finishes, Rachele Barbieri unleashed a powerful sprint Sunday to secure her spot on the podium on the final stage of the tour.

Giro d’ Italia Donne culminated with a 90.5km stage from Abano Terme to Padova. Without the mountainous terrain of the previous stages, it was destined to be a bunch sprint. In the final kilometers, Liv Racing Xstra teammates positioned Barbieri toward the front of the bunch. With good position, Barbieri launched a powerful early sprint. One rider went around in the final meters, but Barbieri held on for second place.

“I was so close to the stage win today,” said Barbieri. “I think I launched my sprint a little too early and gave Ghiara a lead-out that way. For me there was no other way to give it a try for the stage win. So yes, I am disappointed, but also really proud to be on the podium and get so close to the stage victory after this hard stage race.”
